Letting Go is a cultural journey that ferries imagination to places of promise and potential.Migration is the subject, what we take with us, what we leave behind, and what blossoms in the process.

We walk alone, making discoveries along the way, leaving clues of our existence for others to discover.


The history of decorative arts reflect our symbiotic relations as the power of Nature flows through us, nurtures us. It is the hiccups of nature that give us problems, that interrupt our ideas of normal, that draw us into self-reflection.

Imagined Futures
What is the drive that keeps us going? Whose voice speaks in our minds with insatiable appetite for something not yet seen, or heard, or touched? Is it possible that the voice exists in objects made by skilled hands in other places in time; that the making of those objects was the search for answers to questions of our own; that the existence of those objects reflects the strength of a never ending search passed from one generation to the next?

Skyhigh Over Pontiac
2020 marked completion of projects inspired by a Chinese Ming Dynasty tapestry that initiated thoughts on migration, not the tragic contemporary conditions reported in the news, but on the positive cultural values that accompany migrants who leave one country for another. The artist’s responses to the journey had to conclude in his studio in old downtown Pontiac, Michigan where a series of kites, traditionally celebrated as airborne messengers, became a perfect representation of the journey. 28 fabric kite-like forms superimposed with the emblematic flower image depicted in the tapestry, floated above a map of Pontiac, seen as if one was flying high above the city. 
In November 2022, members of the downtown Pontiac community were invited to the studio where 28 guests were invited to celebrate and participate in the project.

Each recipient was encouraged to display and photograph the kite in their place of business with a goal of generating a fresh context for initiating reactions to the migrating Chinese fragment that years earlier had mysteriously found its way into Knodel’s studio. Each kite now lives in a new environment with new owners and renewed potential. Survival is possible (but is not assured!) Will the Ming legacy be sustained?

An Unexpected Guest: COVID-19
In drawings developed during the first few months of lockdown, the Chinese Ming Dynasty&#38;nbsp;flower served as an image that hovers over existence, a perfect metaphor for life. A series of 56 drawings began on February 21, one per day, each starting with the abstracted flower, a hothouse plant dependent on chance and care for survival, a metaphor for life in jeopardy. Spontaneous mark making began to reveal human portraits in the final two rows of Greenhouse drawings, and inspiration for several additional series that followed.

MIGRATING VALUESBeginning in 2018 discovery of a silk tapestry fragment became the source for a four year journey. The silk textile made in Ming Dynasty China reflected long traditions of appreciation for signs and symbols that negotiate with unseen forces. Details of the tapestry fused with unexpected additions. The “new” was found on the edges of the past, discovered as in playing the game Exquisite Corpse.

The 17th century textile fragment was made in China, but never used there. Instead, it boarded a Portuguese ship destined for Lisbon, and was ultimately sold as a rare, exotic and very desirable product. The textile “migrated” from one culture to another, transferring aesthetic values, a coincidence with contemporary human migration occurring today in many parts of the world. Cultural values travel with displaced people.

Skyhigh Over Pontiac
2020 marked completion of projects inspired by the Chinese Ming Dynasty tapestry that initiated thoughts on migration, not the tragic contemporary conditions reported in the news, but on the positive cultural values that accompany migrants who leave one country for another. The artist’s responses to the journey had to conclude in his studio in old downtown Pontiac, Michigan where a series of kites, traditionally celebrated as airborne messengers, became a perfect representation of the journey. 28 fabric kite-like forms superimposed with the emblematic flower image depicted in the tapestry, floated above a map of Pontiac, seen as if one was flying high above the city. 

In November 2022, members of the downtown Pontiac community were invited to the studio where 28 guests were invited to celebrate and participate in the project.

Each recipient was encouraged to display and photograph the kite in their place of business with a goal of generating a fresh context for initiating reactions to the migrating Chinese fragment that years earlier had mysteriously found its way into Knodel’s studio. Each kite now lives in a new environment with new owners and renewed potential. Survival is possible (but is not assured!) Will the Ming legacy be sustained?

An Unexpected Guest: COVID-19
In drawings developed during the first few months of lockdown, the Chinese Ming flower served as an image that hovers over existence, a perfect metaphor for life. A series of 56 drawings began on February 21, one per day, each starting with the abstracted flower, a hothouse plant dependent on chance and care for survival, a metaphor for life in jeopardy. Spontaneous mark making began to reveal human portraits in the final two rows of Greenhouse drawings, and inspiration for several additional series that followed.&#38;nbsp;

The drawings also inspired curiosity about architectural housing for the drawings, places of remembrance, settings that enhance the expressive and emotional conditions inherent in the existence of the virus, conditions that might be memorialized to serve future generations.

 ABOUT THE EXHIBITION: In Gerhardt Knodel’s latest work, gaming-based strategies provide both a visual and conceptual point of entry. Like game playing, involvement often yields unexpected consequences. Approached as pure entertainment, games can evolve into unexpected experiences with both a lighter and a darker side, subtle shifts in expectation relative to outcome. Likewise with art. 


His work poses questions about art and life in the 21st century. Can the act and associations of playing a game be visually communicated? Can the rush of excitement that comes with winning be found in objects that are physically quiet and experienced at a distance? Can the frustration of playing games that cannot be won become a link in understanding the goals of art in which there are no right or wrong answers?

Mixed Media Objects 1993-1998All fabrics comprise fibers and the spaces between them.&#38;nbsp; The space is vital to the pliability of the textile plane, space between fibers allow them to flex, bend or be compressed, interstices allow air to penetrate and temperature to be controlled, space also allows for light penetration or transfer resulting in translucency or transparency of the textile plane.&#38;nbsp; The interval (“ma” in Japanese) is an essence, and an expressive goal.

Architectural Commissions 1977-2005“As he saw it, textiles were the place where structure and the decorative came together.&#38;nbsp; He envisioned combining Mies van der Rohe’s International Style architecture with the sensibilities of an Afghan tent. His early work was unique in public art because it came from the perspective and practices of a maker.&#38;nbsp; All the textiles were handwoven, and they challenged preconceptions from both the craft side and the design side. &#38;nbsp; He was the first to see how panels of fabric cutting through space could relate to and expand upon architectural structure,&#38;nbsp;and he was thinking back to illusions in the theater.”

Woven Wall Works 1982-1995“As Knodel was creating colorful, responsive environments in the sky, so to speak, “installations” - a temporary arrangements of multiple elements - were becoming increasingly common in the art world.&#38;nbsp; Given textile’s flexibility and adaptiveness , and the very idea of a tent as an enclosure for events, at ground level he could further develop notions of layering and veiling, so that viewers’ visual experiences changed as they moved through the space. &#38;nbsp; The artist’s concerns and concepts were now expressed in an accessible theatrical environment.”

Installation Work 1989-1997“As Knodel was creating colorful, responsive environments in the sky, so to speak, “installations” - a temporary arrangements of multiple elements - were becoming increasingly common in the art world.&#38;nbsp; Given textile’s flexibility and adaptiveness , and the very idea of a tent as an enclosure for events, at ground level he could further develop notions of layering and veiling, so that viewers’ visual experiences changed as they moved through the space. &#38;nbsp; The artist’s concerns and concepts were now expressed in an accessible theatrical environment.”
